Welcome to 2010!

Welcome to our latest “SCubs” linking from Cubs this term and joining our troop at the end of Term 1 as full Scouts. Our latest mates are Emma, Vance, Jude, Kelly and Blake. I’m sure everyone will make them welcome.

 

Sadly, a couple of people will be leaving us in term 1 as they continue their quest in Scouting and move on to Venturers. Troop Leader Holly and Quokkas Patrol Leader Matthew will be moving up at the end of Term 1 joining Cameron and Alex who went up last year.

 

The exciting growth in members and the movements of some of our older people last term and this term means that it’s time for a patrol reorganisation which will be handled at Troop Council. I’m pleased to announce that the long lost Dingoes patrol has returned and Andrew has accepted the role of Patrol Leader. Andrew is a quiet achiever who really knows his stuff and I welcome him into our Leadership team. Since he never took his Dingoes badge off, mum doesn’t even need to change his shirt!

Group Picnic – Feb 5th 7pm

In the grounds of Emerald Museum (entrance at the corner of Chricton Rd and Princess Ave). All families welcome. BYO everything. Please come along to this informal occasion to meet the families in our group.

Founders Day – Feb 22nd

On Feb 22nd there is supposed to be a district activity but we don’t have details yet so it’s not in the program. Keep the day free please.

Term Focus is Campcraft leading to Stradbroke Cup

Last year we achieved two silver medals at the Stradbroke Cup camping competition. How does gold in 2010 sound?

Fundraising Needs You and Your Parents

We’re coming up to the first of our major fundraising events for the year with Thomas Parking. This fundraising allows us to keep your fees low, maintain our youth programmes and to support the attendance of Group members to major events such as Jamboree and Cuboree. Not to mention boring things such as utility bills and hall maintenance. Please don’t ignore our fundraising efforts; Service is an important part of Scouting for the families, not just the Scouts.

Leaders Wanted

We’re still looking for a Group Leader. Currently I do this, but taking care of this mostly administrative role makes it hard to give my best as Scout Leader. The role really is an easy one and could be done by any parent. Enjoying the odd challenge and experience in herding cats wouldn’t hurt J.

 

We’re also looking to recruit another assistant Scout Leader during 2010. If you’re interested in the outdoors and Scouting principals then please let me know.

Update: Holly Latter has finished her work and has now completed all requirements. Fantastic!

Update: Alex Pavlinovich has finished his work and has now also completed all requirements! Excellent.

Cameron Brock has completed all requirements for his Australian Scout Medallion!!! Way to go Cam!

Matt T. has completed everything for ASM - Outstanding effort!

The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest possible achievement in the Scout Section.

Scouts who succeed in achieving the medallion receive their green cord and the cloth medallion on application by their leader. The bronze medallion is presented later at a significant public function.

All four of our Scouts have received their ASM and will proudly wear the cloth badge on their uniform at Jamboree.

We serve the township of Emerald situated in the Dandenong Ranges East of Melbourne in Victoria.

Our Group concists of the following sections

  • Joey Scouts (6 - 8 years) [currently in hiatus - nearest is Gembrook]
  • Cub Scouts (7 to 11 years)
  • Scouts (11 to 15 years)
  • F.E.A.T. - First Emerald Abseiling Team and the tower.

And has strong affiliation with

  • Foresters & JETS Venturer Scouts (14.5 to 18 years)
  • Ogilvy Rovers (17 years to 26 years)
  • YVRAT - Yarra Valley Region Abseiling Team
All of our sections always welcome expressions of interest from youth (boys and girls) who wish to join our Scouting community or perhaps just want to find out more. Please feel free to contact us using the email link below. The address is checked periodically and queries are forwarded onto the appropriate section leader.

Want to get your kids off the video game? Come along! All sections offer try-before-you-buy style introductory nights where there is no cost and no obligation. Parent Helpers are always welcome.

The latest term programs can always be found attached to this article. Check back often for updated verions.

We publish the programs of the Cub Scout and Scout sections only. We do have active Venturers and Rovers but they publish their programs via other means.

Dilly Bag PDF Print E-mail

For those new to Scouts, your world is full of strange new terms and acronyms... One of those is "Dilly Bag". A dilly bag is a cloth draw string bad, preferably a natural cloth like cotton. Natural cloth is preferred because it breathes allowing your gear to stay dry without going mouldy! Net bags are not desirable because dust, dirt and bugs get in easily.

The dilly bag is used to transport and store your camp eating gear.

Inside your dilly bag should be:

  • Plate
  • Bowl
  • Cutlery (Knife, Fork & Spoon)
  • Cup 

Going to and from camp you might also have a tea towell or two in your bag, but they must come out and be hung up in the camp kitchen or eating shelter once you arrive.

You can make a bag out of a cotton pillowcase or Snowgum have great cotton bags with a drawstring for $4.95 which make fantastic dilly bags.
